September 2009 - Newsletter ArticleWindows 7, Your Next Desktop? | |
| Starting in October Microsoft will launch the next generation of Windows desktop operating system, Windows 7. The initial reviews of the operating system from industry professionals and columnists have been very positive. Windows 7 is built on the Windows Vista operating system code base, but most of the annoying system management and alerts have been removed, or moved into the background. The end result is a desktop operating system that is faster, uses fewer resources, boots up faster and has enhanced user interface capabilities.
In keeping with Microsoft's tradition of confusing the market place as much as possible with multiple versions of a product, Windows 7 brings this marketing wizardry to a new level. Gone are all of the product designations from Windows XP and Vista. The new flavors of Windows 7 include, Starter, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. Windows 7 Starter was designed for "Netbook" computers with limit resources. As a result, most of the features and extras are stripped out of this version. The Starter version will only be available on new "Netbook" computers. Most home users will get Windows 7 Home Premium edition. Home Premium will also be an upgrade option. Features include improved navigation, IE 8, faster document searching, and simplified home networking. Windows 7 Professional includes all of the features from Home Premium and adds features for corporate networks. Included in the Professional version of the software is a "compatibility" mode for running legacy XP and earlier applications. The "compatibility" mode is actually a virtual XP computer that is started to run the legacy applications. By running within the XP virtual machine, most legacy applications will run without a problem. Windows 7 Professional also includes support for Active Directory so that the system may join corporate networks. A backup utility is also included as part of the Windows 7 Professional version. Windows 7 Ultimate includes all of the features of the Home Premium and Professional versions and includes additional features for corporate users. For people that travel extensively, the Ultimate version includes BitLocker encryption technology that encrypts data stored on the hard drive. Especially useful for laptops, the BitLocker technology will encrypt and protect data on a hard drive so that if the laptop is lost or stolen, none of the data can be accessed. The Ultimate version also includes the ability to dynamically switch between any of 35 languages facilitating international travelers and communications between countries. DeckerWright Corporation will be selling and supporting the Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate versions. Any XP Pro computer purchased in the last year would be a candidate for a Windows 7 upgrade. Make DeckerWright Corporation your source for Windows 7 software and support. More Sept 2009 DWC Newletter Articles; The Secrets To a Longer Computer Life | What A Difference 25 Years Makes |
