While we were doing research on a problem for a customer, we discovered that many of the Federal Web Sites had been taken offline. Access to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and other Federal sites have been interrupted. The web site for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is online, but experiencing heavy traffic. We are closely monitoring the Federal time synchronization service that is hosted by the NIST that is used for providing accurate time settings for most computer networks in this country. If this facility goes offline as a result of the Federal shutdown, there could be significant impacts on the Internet and a company’s local area network. We will notify our customers via e-mail if the Federal time servers go offline so that alternate commercial time sources can be tapped for this important service.
