Windows XP End of Support 4/8/2014

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will be end support on one or its most successful products, Windows XP.  For those who can remember back that far, Windows XP was the successor of Windows 98 SE and Windows Millennium Edition.  Starting in 2002, Windows XP became the de facto desktop operating system for over 10 years.  On April 8, 2014 support will be ended for the product.  No new operating system updates will be pushed after that date.  In addition to the operating system updates being ended, there will be no more updates for Internet Explorer browsers running on XP.  Microsoft has announced that they will continue to publish definition file updates for installed versions of Microsoft Security Essentials and Defender until July 14, 2015 for computers with Windows XP.  Officially from Microsoft, computers running Windows XP will be no longer secure after April 8, 2014.  If you have a Windows XP computer, contact us today to upgrade to the next generation of technology.

Windows 8+?

The reports I have been reading indicate that the updated release of Windows 8 will resolve many of the user interface problems associated with the current version of Windows 8.  The naming for the new version plus whether the early adopters of Windows 8 will get a free upgrade are still being worked out.  The revision reflects Microsoft’s grudging acknowledgement that keyboards and mice are here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.

Windows 8, Ready or Not!

In recent discussions with my suppliers I learned that the major manufacturers, Dell, HP and Lenovo are in the process of transitioning their PC product lines to Windows 8.  The target for completion of this transition is the end of April.  What does this mean?  It means that if the Microsoft and the manufacturers stick to this schedule, by the end of April you will not be able to purchase a PC with Windows 7 pre-installed.  If you are thinking of getting a new PC with Windows 7, better hurry!

Is Windows 8 ready for business?

Windows 8 is Microsoft’s most recent desk top software release. Turning on your computer you will be greeted with a foreign user interface, the same kind used on a Windows phone or Surface tablet. If you don’t have one of those mobile devices, you are going to be lost and frustrated immediately. Should you get a business PC with Windows 8 pre-installed? The short answer is no, unless you are already a Surface or Windows phone user.
