Free Upgrade to Windows 8.1 for Windows 8 owners

Microsoft had a large presence at a conference I attended in Phoenix, Arizona this week.  I had an opportunity to see and test the latest release of Windows, version 8.1.  Unlike Windows 8, Windows 8.1 is keyboard and mouse friendly.  A start menu has been returned to the lower left corner of the screen making Windows 8.1 resemble Windows 7.  Microsoft indicated that any owners of Windows 8 would be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 8.1.  Details for the process are pending, but the release date of October 18 appears to be set.  Anyone needing a new PC should wait for Windows 8.1.

Windows 8+?

The reports I have been reading indicate that the updated release of Windows 8 will resolve many of the user interface problems associated with the current version of Windows 8.  The naming for the new version plus whether the early adopters of Windows 8 will get a free upgrade are still being worked out.  The revision reflects Microsoft’s grudging acknowledgement that keyboards and mice are here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.

Step 1: BYOD Policy

Long before a company allows business documents to be accessed on devices owned by employees (Bring Your Own Device, BYOD), a strong and clear corporate acceptable use policy needs to be developed.  The policy should include how the employee’s device may be used on business time and what applications are acceptable.  The employee must agree to whatever software the company uses to distribute, secure and manage corporate documents.   The policy must include an acknowledgement from the employee that the company has the right to wipe the data from the device and that the company cannot be held liable for the possible destruction of any of the employee’s data.

Windows 8, Ready or Not!

In recent discussions with my suppliers I learned that the major manufacturers, Dell, HP and Lenovo are in the process of transitioning their PC product lines to Windows 8.  The target for completion of this transition is the end of April.  What does this mean?  It means that if the Microsoft and the manufacturers stick to this schedule, by the end of April you will not be able to purchase a PC with Windows 7 pre-installed.  If you are thinking of getting a new PC with Windows 7, better hurry!

Is Windows 8 ready for business?

Windows 8 is Microsoft’s most recent desk top software release. Turning on your computer you will be greeted with a foreign user interface, the same kind used on a Windows phone or Surface tablet. If you don’t have one of those mobile devices, you are going to be lost and frustrated immediately. Should you get a business PC with Windows 8 pre-installed? The short answer is no, unless you are already a Surface or Windows phone user.
